Parkfields Community Garden

Parkfields Community Garden was established on derelict land in a corner of Parkfields Allotments in North Kingston. Long disused due to waterlogging, the space was overgrown and used as a dump. They are using permaculture principles to design the site as a resource for the local community, with plentiful fruit, vegetables, herbs, natural diversity and opportunities for learning, rest and play. Since 2009 they have cleared it of rubbish and some weeds, and installed a large compost heap, shed, poly-tunnel, raised beds and access path, all from reclaimed materials. They’ve spent some time observing the site’s wildlife, and its patterns of drainage, light, frost and wind. They’ve retained three large willows, some hazel, lilac, elder, hops, horseradish and nettles, and also planted vegetables, including heritage varieties, a number of fruit trees, a strawberry patch and a native wild hedgerow.

Parkfields Community Garden plan to host educational workshops, forest school activities and gardening clubs for community and school groups. The site is listed as Capital Growth Space 609 – part of Kingston’s commitment to more community growing-spaces in London.They normally have a volunteers’ work session on Thursday afternoons, from 2pm-5pm.
