What is River of Flowers?

The 'river' in River of Flowers is an evocative way of describing the planting of urban meadows in 'pollination streams' or 'green corridors' in order to help our pollinators, bees, butterflies and hoverflies, find forage in the city. Mad About Meadows

Happy New Year!

In 2012, we should see the flowering of many new urban meadows in time for the Olympics. Twenty-five organisations were brought together by London in Bloom to create new wildflower meadows across London and the Mad about Meadows campaign, launched on 8 August 2011, has created trial meadows in parks, open spaces and schools in 9 locations across London, taken part in the Lord Mayor's Show last November and set in motion new projects including the transformation of amenity grassland in a housing estate in Tower Hamlets and a London-wide schools competition to create 100 mini meadows - for more details please email madaboutmeadows@london2012.com.

With the support of Highbury Transition Network and Islington Council Greenspace plus a generous donation by the Urban Physic Garden, River of Flowers ran two Pop Up Meadows events, firstly on 24 September 2011 at Highbury Fields to acknowledge Moving Planet Day and again with a workshop on 17 November 2011 in the Olden Garden, Islington. Each Pop Up Meadow is made up of nine tiny urban meadow kits of gorgeous meadow flowers in recycled and biodegradable boxes which were dispersed to various primary schools, parks and community gardens in north London. These Pop Up Meadows are helping to create the north London 'river' of flowers. If you are interested in creating a River of Flowers in other areas of London or would like to create a meadow in your garden, the Urban Meadow Kits will be available to order on the River of Flowers website soon. Email info@riverofflowers.org if you would like to be notified when. River of Flowers is a not for profit company.
